2. BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The 8 disciplines is an approach used to identify, correct and eliminate recurring problems. This approach establishes an enduring corrective action based on the statistical analysis of the problem and focuses on the origin of the problem by determining its root causes. The eight disciplines are:
Create a team
Define and describe the problem
Develop an interim containment action
Define a root cause analysis and escape point
Define permanent corrective actions
Implement and validate the permanent corrective actions
Prevent recurrence
Congratulate your team
3. HOW TO USE THE 8 DISCIPLINES IN THE GEMBA WALK
Similarly to other continuous improvement and problem-solving practices, the 8 Disciplines approach provides a framework to structurally address any critical or complex problems that might have been identified during the Gemba Walk and for which a Kaizen event has been initiated. The team then follows the 8 Disciplines to not only quickly contain the problem, but also to identify the root cause, define corrective and preventive actions, validate those actions, and prevent the occurrence of the same or similar problem.
