1. GEMBA WALK STAGE
Recommended to be used before the Gemba Walk
2. BRIEF DESCRIPTION
A SIPOC is a high-level visual representation of an end-to-end process. It is used to summarize complex processes in a simple form, using five columns: Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, and Customers.
Suppliers: The suppliers of all inputs to the process
Inputs: Materials, resources or knowledge required to execute the process
Process: A structured set of high-level activities that transforms a set of inputs into specified outputs, providing value for the customers and stakeholders
Outputs: The products or services that result from the process
Customer: The recipient of the process output (internal or external)
3. HOW TO USE SIPOC IN THE GEMBA WALK
SIPOC is utilized as a starting activity in the creation of the Value Stream Map (VSM) at the early stages of any process improvement initiative. The Gemba team first gathers high level information about the suppliers, inputs, process steps, outputs and customers and aligns on the high-level process, before investing resources to create a detailed VSM. SIPOCs will be continuously updated as the Gemba team gathers information during Gemba Walks.
4. ROLES AND ACTIVITIES
Leader: Gathers the team to develop the SIPOC, schedules and leads activities, introduces SIPOC to new team members to help them understand the high-level process and identify potential problems to be improved
Facilitator: Supports the development of the SIPOC by coaching the leader and team members, provides templates, guidelines and training
Team member: Provides process insights
5. EXPECTED BENEFITS FOR THE GEMBA WALK

Discovers opportunity areas or where the problems are occurring
Supports the creation of a Value Stream Map
Encourages knowledge-driven decision-making
